Scratched out on a little spiral tablet, back in about 1974 or so, I jotted down my life dreams. I wanted to live on the water, remodel an old house, and, among a few other things, publish books!
Now, MANY years later, those little scratches came to fruition! Inscribe what is in your heart … and wait.
Between 1974 and today, I went to college and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Education Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in English. That’s funny … because I am a terrible speller!
Over the years, I taught first and second grades and then went on to become an inclusion writing teacher. I taught off and on over 11 years while intermittently staying at home to rear my two lovely daughters.
Over those years, I longed to earn a master’s degree. At the age of fifty, I bit the bullet, studied for the terrifying Graduate Record Exam, and with some tutoring help from my smart children, I passed and was accepted into the Master’s Program of Library Science at Sam Houston State University.
As a librarian, I searched in earnest for books targeting two to seven year old children, and children with special needs, that engaged them in active participation, utilizing rhyme, rhythm, onomatopoeia, and action. Student involvement and excitement for books was, and is still, my goal. Watching young children connect, smile, and laugh ensures me that a gateway to reading is near at hand!
Now … the fun continues! What do kids love? What makes them laugh? What makes them connect to the world?
Well … from my experience, the answer to these questions is easy … playing in the water, exploring plants and bugs, petting animals, eating lunch, candy, new shoes, toys, singing, dancing, being read to, dressing up as someone very special to their inner being, playing outside, their parents and grandparents, and MORE!
So, the mom, teacher, and librarian in me wanted to give children everything … through books! The Mr. Taxi Book Collection is my gift~
